MISSION DANCE CENTRE:
Programs & Classes

Welcome to Mission Dance Centre & Company. We are dedicated to bringing the joy of dance and performance to our students through recreational and pre-professional dance classes in Kelowna.

Dance Assessment

BEFORE REGISTERING for any level and type of MDC dance program:
Every student wishing to enter into either the Recreational MDC, Pre-Professional VDA Programs, or Teacher Courses, is welcomed with a free and friendly dance assessment prior to registering and before taking their first group class. With this quick 30 minute assessment our staff can ensure that each new dancer is placed in the appropriate dance program, according to ability and focus of the dance student and their expectations.

NEW: MDC’s Teachers Course

Become trained and certified in the VDA method of any level of Ballet as an assistant or teacher for pre-school levels all the way to professional. Please inquire about our planned upcoming courses.

Dance Programs

Pre-Professional

The Vadurova Dance Academy (VDA)

The Okanagan’s finest Pre-Professional Program since 2005, designed for dancers ages 10+ who are passionate about ballet and want to enrich their knowledge and technique in ballet among other styles such as flamenco, contemporary, modern, and more. This is an intense performance based program with classes focused on technique and artistry as well as repertoire for performances such as Mission Dance Centre’s “The Nutcracker” and “Swan Lake”.

Recreational Dance

Mission Dance Centre offers various styles of dance for ages 3 to Adult in our Recreational Programs. Students in this program will receive at least 1 performance opportunity per school year.

Adult Ballet and Performance

This popular program is perfect for adults whether interested in getting back into dance or starting fresh! Weekly classes equip dancers with beautiful and strong posture, flexibility, poise, and physical co-ordination awareness. Students in this program also have the option to partake in MDC’s performance productions.

Post-Graduate Program

The Vadurova Dance Academy (VDA) offers dance training for students after graduating high school in our professional Post Grad Program. This is a flexible program focused on the transition from student to professional. Ask us how to be admitted into this all inclusive year-round dance training program geared towards those who aspire to have the opportunity to perform and pursue a professional career in the dance world.

Dance Styles

Ballet

Available in CDTA syllabus from MDC’s Apprentice levels all the way to Senior Company levels.
Professional ballet and pointe training are also taught in Vaganova, Cechetti, and other ballet styles depending on guest teachers throughout the
year. Special care is given to injury prevention and correct technique. Body alignment and posture are taught with diligence and care. If injury does occur it is handled with special attention and associated professionals are recommended for proper recovery.

Spanish & Flamenco

Castanet work (hand castanet playing) is introduced at the youngest levels of our program as it develops an awareness of rhythm immediately. Students gain the ability to execute dance steps with the required rhythm through Spanish dance steps and techniques.  Flamenco style dance of varying rhythmical forms further challenges the dance student to have the ability to perform with rhythmical acuity in any given dance form. This type of rhythmical training from a young age sets up the dancer to be able to pick up any future rhythms in any future style of their advanced dance training.  Flamenco dance training also develops a strong sense of stage presence so necessary for any dance style.

Dancers Life Course

For the senior professional dancer the Life Course is focused on preparing students for all aspects of life for a career in dance and beyond. This includes
  • physical and emotional health
  • schedule and daily academic
  • training planning
  • life values
  • personal financial management
  • guest professional dance speakers/mentors
  • goal setting – short term and long term, show time preparation, and more.
